Frameless glass balustrades are all about clean lines, open views, and contemporary elegance. If you’re after a system that looks high-end but is still installer-friendly, the Wedge-Loc Duo ticks all the boxes. It’s a dry-glaze, wedge-based channel system that locks glass in place with no messy resins, clamps, or handrails required.
At Fusion Glass Ltd, we supply the full Wedge-Loc Duo system along with custom-cut laminated glass panels to make installation simple and smooth. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to install it.
What Is Wedge-Loc Duo?
Wedge-Loc Duo is a fully mechanical balustrade system that uses adjustable wedges inside a base or side-mounted aluminium channel. These wedges lock the glass in place without adhesives, offering a secure and regulation-compliant installation for both domestic and commercial applications.
It’s particularly popular for balconies, terraces, patios, and even stair voids where a handrail isn’t required or desired.
What You’ll Need
• Wedge-Loc Duo base or side-fix channel
• Wedge-Loc Duo inner and outer wedge kits
• Toughened laminated glass panels (17.5mm or 21.5mm recommended)
• Fixings suitable for your surface (timber, concrete, or steel)
• Setting blocks and packers
• Suction cups, rubber mallet, and Allen key or ratchet
• Spirit level, laser level or string line
• Optional: channel cladding or finishing trims
Step 1: Prepare the Substrate
First, make sure your installation surface is solid and level. Wedge-Loc Duo must be fixed to a strong, flat surface – concrete or structural steel is ideal. Mark out the channel positions and drill fixing holes according to the pre-drilled channel slots or as per site requirements.
Use resin anchors or heavy-duty fixings to secure the channel firmly. A level channel ensures the glass will sit straight and true, so don’t rush this step.
Step 2: Insert Setting Blocks
Before the glass goes in, drop rubber setting blocks into the channel. These provide cushioning and ensure the correct height. Typically, place one block about 50mm from each edge of the glass panel.
Step 3: Lower In the Glass Panels
Use suction cups to carefully lift and lower each glass panel into the channel. The glass should rest gently on the setting blocks and be positioned to leave a 5mm expansion gap between each panel.
Use a string line or laser across the top of the glass to make sure your panels align perfectly as you go.
Step 4: Fit the Wedge-Loc Duo System
Now comes the clever part. Insert the Wedge-Loc Duo inner and outer wedges on both sides of each glass panel. Using a ratchet or Allen key, tighten the wedges gradually. As they expand, they grip the glass and lock it securely in place.
Repeat this process for each panel. You’ll notice how solid the structure feels once everything is locked in.
Step 5: Add Finishing Touches
Once all panels are installed and secure, clip on your cover plates or cladding trims to hide the fixing channel and give your balustrade a sleek, completed appearance. Give the glass and aluminium a final clean, and your frameless balustrade is ready to enjoy.
Tips from Fusion Glass Ltd
• Measure glass after channel installation for a perfect fit. Measure from the channel base to your desired height, and allow a small clearance (usually 10mm).
• Always use toughened laminated glass for safety and compliance. We recommend 17.5mm or 21.5mm depending on the location.
• Leave 5mm gaps between glass panels for expansion and silicone if sealing externally.
Why Use Wedge-Loc Duo?
• No adhesive or wet-glazing – fully dry-fit
• Easy to adjust, even after glass is in place
• Strong and secure – ideal for raised areas
• Fully compliant with UK building regs when used with suitable glass
